Baby Shower and Bridal Shower Invitation Wording (With Etiquette Notes)
Showers have their own small rules of etiquette that are easy to get wrong if you've never organised one before.
Baby showers and bridal showers share a lot of planning logic with birthdays and weddings, but they carry a few etiquette rules of their own that catch first-time hosts out. Getting these right matters more than the wording itself, since a shower is meant to feel like a surprise-adjacent treat for the guest of honour, not just another party.
Who should actually send the invitation
Traditionally, a shower is hosted and invited by someone other than the guest of honour, a close friend, sister, or family member, rather than the mother-to-be or bride-to-be herself. This isn't a hard rule anymore, especially for smaller or more informal showers, but it's worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to the most obvious person sending it.
What to include
- Who the shower is for, and their relationship to the host if it's not obvious.
- Date, time and venue, same as any invite.
- Whether it's a surprise. If it is, say so clearly so nobody accidentally spoils it in a group chat.
- Gift registry details or gift guidance, since showers are gift-focused by tradition.
- Any theme, if you have one (colours, a nursery theme, games planned).
- RSVP deadline, especially if you're catering or ordering a cake.
Example: baby shower
A little one is on the way! Please join us to celebrate [Name] as she prepares to welcome her baby girl. Saturday 9 August, 2pm, [venue/address]. Theme: soft pink and gold. Registry details attached. Kindly RSVP by 2 August so we can finalise catering.
Example: bridal shower
Help us shower [Name] with love before she says "I do"! Join us Saturday 9 August, 2pm, [venue/address]. It's a surprise, so please keep this between us. RSVP by 2 August.
Timing it around the main event
A bridal shower is usually held a few weeks to a couple of months before the wedding, giving enough separation that it doesn't compete for guests' attention with the wedding itself. A baby shower is typically held a month or two before the due date, early enough to be comfortable for the mother-to-be but late enough that the pregnancy feels settled. For general send-date guidance, see how far in advance to send invitations, and if you're also planning the wedding invite itself, our wedding invitation wording guide covers that separately.
Keeping the tone light and warm
Showers are meant to feel intimate and celebratory rather than formal, so wording can be warmer and more playful than a wedding invite while still carrying all the practical details clearly. A bridal shower invitation or baby shower invitation with soft colours and a personal photo tends to set that tone before a guest has even read a word.
